Hurricane recovery stories
(6/16/08) — Christian Fellowship bonds are made over distances that sometimes number thousands of miles. For a mission team from Ohio in 2006, it was 1,000 miles to the Gulf Coast where Katrina destroyed many homes. They traveled to Moss Point, Miss., and worked for a week to rehabilitate homes for the residents. They met and worked with members of the Disciples of Christ church in Moss Point. Their efforts paid off and they helped several families return to live in their homes.
(5/30/08) — By now, most who read DisciplesWorld have seen extensive coverage of the hurricane recovery efforts that have been taking place since hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated vast areas of America’s Gulf coast.
ROCKWOOD, Tenn. (11/15/07) — Our group proved plenty noticeable Sunday, Oct. 7, clad in our less-than-subtle red Disciples Disaster Response T-shirts and gathered in our sanctuary for the first time since we returned from our week-long mission trip.
COlUMBUS, Ohio (10/25/07) — On Sept. 29, eight volunteers left Ohio (to be joined by a ninth person from Las Vegas) for Slidell, Louisiana, to help pick up the pieces from Hurricane Katrina. Four were from Northwest Christian Church in Columbus, three from First Christian in Wadsworth, Ohio, and two others joined in. For four of the volunteers, it was a third trip.
HAMPTON, Va. (7/31/07) — An intergenerational group consisting of fourteen members from First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Hampton, Va., recently traveled to Gulfport, Miss., to help with continuous efforts associated with Hurricane Katrina.
A typical day in Beaumont, Texas. Some adults are up at 6 and some by 6:30 a.m. The kids from Westview Christian Church in Indianapolis, Ind., wander in for breakfast at 7. Everyone is at the worksite by 8. Work assignments are issued by Habitat for Humanity. Everyone disburses to the trailer or the ConX to pick up brushes, paint, pans, buckets, drills, caulking guns, and so on.
I really got it wrong! I was one of a seven-person mission team from First Christian Church of Colorado Springs that went to Slidell, Louisiana, in March to help with the needed rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Katrinas devastation.
How much Coke is in one of those tiny little Coke cans?
New Orleans (3/27/07) When my friend Chandra asked me to go on a mission trip to New Orleans, my first thought was, "What can I do? I have no construction skills." I certainly didn't want to spend a week cleaning up after men. I don't even like to clean up after the two I have at home (my husband and 16-year-old son). My friend hads six mission trips under her belt and assured me that it would be a life-changing experience.
